Ballwin: Brief Overview

City of Ballwin

The City of Ballwin derived its name from its founder, John Ball, back in 1837. Originally named "Ballshow", Ball amended the recorded plat to be named Ballwin. It is said that the change was a result of a friendly rivalry with the neighboring City of Manchester. John Ball envisioned many great things for his new town and was confident that it would "win out" in reputation and growth.

Ballwin has grown from the small town John Ball knew with only a few homes and businesses, to a city of nearly 30,000 today. The City of Ballwin is served by the AAA Public School Districts of Rockwood and Parkway, various private and parochial schools, and is within minutes of five universities and colleges.

Ballwin, while continuously promoting commercial development and strengthening the relationship with the businesses, the city still offers a primarily residential community. Housing ranges in style and pricing. The City of Ballwin has been able to waive the municipal property tax for its residents because of annual revenue generated by the area businesses.

Ballwin's well-developed system of parks and recreational facilities include a municipal golf course, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, and two recreational centers.

The City of Ballwin is easily accessible to Interstates 270, 40/64, and 44, and is located only a half-hour from St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and 40 minutes to downtown St. Louis.
